Is AS art worth it?

To be honest, there is a big difference between GCSE and AS art. GCSE is filled with experimentation and finding your abilities yet AS is more focused on how you use those abilities with imagination. The examiners are much more focused on the quality rather than the quantity, as for GCSE quantity was a highly demanded factor. Wanting to combine my future with Art and Design, I am required to have decent grades in Art and Design. Yet in this post I will focus on the actual journey of my year 12 Art experience.

First of all, the amount of work you are expected to produce is around the same amount as for GCSE yet with much less time. To be exact, I had to produce the same amount of work as for GCSE in 8 months. Fun isnt it? It gets better. Doing sixth form, learning to combine subjects together and not falling behind is the key. For example, with doing art, you can’t give up on other subjects while working on your portfolio. Thats the mistake I made during my GCSE’s. Whereas Alevels are much harder than GCSE’s meaning you will be expected to do alot of work in both school and your free time.

Furthermore, never leave coursework for last minute. I never did that although I knew a person that always left their work until a week before the deadline and then spent the whole upcoming week complaining about how much work they has to do. With art, you physically can’t produce quality work with a little amount of time. If you want the grade, then you have to actually put effort into it. As I mentioned previously, AS art is not the same as GCSE. You are required to produce art at a higher standard which does take alot time and effort. If you don’t have that time or you will not be able to produce art to your best quality due to some reasons, do not take it.  Personally, I plan to combine Art and my future which is why I MAKE time to do art.

When I began AS art, my first thought was that I will spend my time painting or drawing to relax and put myself off school work but it did not happen. I mean it did for the first 2-3 months when there were no deadlines, no exams coming up. Yet when everything else hit, such as exams and catching up other subjects, I was struggling to keep up my art  to a high standard. My art became something I was forced to do. Something I knew I had to do instead of wanting to do it. If you are someone who is not passionate about art enough to spend nights coming up with ideas Ideas and developing them, this is not for you.

AS art is all about development of ideas and developing work, which is not as easy as it sounds. At this point, you are expected to create something original with the help of research. Imagination is the key. Sometimes it can take weeks or even months to come up with something worthy and unique.

In the end it’s your choice and only yours. No one can tell you if you will be able to handle it, apart from you.  I never regretted the decision of taking Art. Yet most of my free time was gone.
